Building the BibleAn English Bible For English Catholics |
What happened to the English Catholics in France? |
They established a Catholic college in Douay (now Douai) that was later moved to Rheims, France. The New Testament was translated from the Latin Vulgate by Gregory Martin, an Oxford scholar who specialized in Hebrew studies. The New Testament was published in 1578. Because of a lack of funds, the Old Testament was not published until 1609. By this time, the college had moved back to Douay. This Bible translation became known as the Douay-Rheims Bible.
