Old Testament

The Pentateuch

What happened when Jacob and Esau met again?

Like two gunslingers on a dusty road in front of a saloon, Jacob and Esau eyed each other from a distance. The reader knows Jacob’s thoughts and feelings, but can only guess at Esau’s. Was Esau still angry with Jacob for his past treacheries? In what has to be one of the most exhilarating reunion scenes ever, the Bible explains: “But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.” (NRSV, Genesis 33:4)
