Gospels and Acts of the Apostles

What happened when Jesus went to Mary and Martha’s house?

Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to what he had to say. Martha bustled around, distracted by the duties of playing hostess. Martha complained to Jesus about what she viewed as Mary’s laziness. Jesus replied, “My dear Martha, you are upset over all these details! There is really only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it—and I won’t take it away from her.” (NLT, Luke 10:41–42) This brief account reveals a couple of important things about Jesus and his ministry. First, while women were second class citizens in that day and age, Jesus loved and valued them. Second, Jesus pointed out the importance of spending quality time with him. Busyness, even on Jesus’ behalf, could take the focus away from what Jesus really wanted from his followers.
