The Pentateuch

What is mummification?

Mummification was the process of embalming dead people in ancient Egypt. Jacob and Joseph were both mummified. The process involved removing the stomach, intestines, liver, and lungs, and storing them in jars. The brain was removed by sliding a small hook up into the nose and scraping the brain out bit by bit. The body cavity was stuffed with natron, a type of salt. Oils and spices were spread over the body, and then the body was wrapped in linen strips. Voila! Mummy!
