What is the Cyrus Cylinder?

Discovered in Babylon in 1879 via an expedition sponsored by the British Museum, the Cyrus Cylinder is a barrel-shaped clay cylinder about 9” tall. Covered with text written in cuneiform, the cylinder dates from about 539 B.C.E. The Cyrus Cylinder chronicles the military conquests of the Persian ruler, King Cyrus.
