Gospels and Acts of the Apostles

What is the difference between an apostle and a disciple?

The word “apostle” is from the Greek word “apóstolos,” which means “to send out.” In biblical studies, an apostle is someone Jesus sent out into the world to spread the gospel. The word “disciple” comes from the Latin “discipulus,” which means “to learn.” In biblical studies, a disciple is someone who learns or follows the teachings of Jesus. Traditionally, the word apostle is used to designate any of the original twelve disciples called by Jesus to preach the gospel.
