By this point in church history, Christianity was seen no longer as a branch of Judaism, but as a distinct and separate religion. So the earlier arguments about being circumcised or not, eating kosher food or not, etc., were moot. The conflicts John wrote about had to with congregations splitting over the whys and wherefores of Jesus’ life and ministry.
