With Abraham, circumcision became an indication of Israelite faith. However, the Israelites were not the only ones who practiced circumcision. According to various passages in the Bible, Egyptians, Edomites, Ammonites, and Moabites practiced circumcision. Some reasons for the practice were that it was for hygiene, that it was a rite of passage, and that it was a tribal mark.
