The Pentateuch

What kept Jacob from marrying Rachel right away?

Rachel’s father, Laban, saw to it that the course of true love did not run smoothly. Jacob agreed to work for Laban for seven years in exchange for Rachel’s hand in marriage. Jacob loved Rachel so much that he worked the seven years cheerfully and without complaint. When the seven years ended, Jacob married Laban’s daughter all right, only it was not Rachel he married, but Leah wearing a veil! It is up for speculation as to how Jacob could not realize he was marrying the wrong sister, veil or not. “And Jacob said to Laban, ‘What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?’” (NIV, Genesis 29:25) Jacob, the one who deceived his father and brother, found himself on the receiving end of deception.
