Gideon’s personality was one entrenched in fear and doubt. He feared the enemies of the Israelites. He doubted his own abilities—and God’s. After all, he was the youngest son of a family who was part of the smallest tribe. He asked for and received proof that it was really an angel who talked to him. He asked for repeatedly—and received—proof from God that God really and truly wanted him, Gideon, to go up and fight for the Israelites. Once again, God showed his penchant for picking unlikely people to carry out his purpose.
