Jesus wanted to bring people to God: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (KJV, Matthew 4:17) Jesus understood the struggles of being human: “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” (NRSV, Matthew 9:36) Jesus summed up his mission this way: “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.” (NRSV, Matthew 9:12–13) Also, Jesus taught his followers the importance of loving each other, and treating each other with fairness, compassion, and understanding.
