He was big-hearted. Abraham traveled for a long time with his nephew, Lot. Both of them accumulated livestock, silver, and gold. Their livestock grew so numerous that the land would not support both Abraham’s livestock and Lot’s livestock. So, in a gesture of humility and generosity, Abraham told Lot, “This arguing between our herdsmen has got to stop.… After all, we are close relatives! I’ll tell you what we’ll do. Take your choice of any section of the land you want, and we will separate. If you want that area over there, then I’ll stay here. If you want to stay in this area then I’ll move on to another place.” (NLT, Genesis 13:8–9) Lot chose Sodom (bad idea). Abraham chose Canaan.
