The Geneva Bible was brought to America by the Puritans in the 1600s, but it was not the first translation to be printed in America. The first Bible to be printed on American soil was the Algonquin Bible. It was published in 1663 under the title Mamuse Wunneetapanatamwe Up-Biblum God. It was in the language of Massachuset, a dialect of Algonquin, and was spoken by the Massachusetts Bay Indians. Before the printing of the Algonquin Bible, the Massachuset language had never been written down.

Other Native American translations followed, including a Mohawk translation of the Gospel of Mark in 1787 and a Cherokee translation of the New Testament in 1857.
