In addition to the obstacles brought about by people outside their faith, the Jewish people dealt with infighting as well. Some of the wealthier Jewish people took pledges on loans. Mosaic Law forbids this. When Nehemiah found out, he was angry. He said to the ones in the wrong, “Let us stop this taking of interest. Restore to them, this very day, their fields, their vineyards, their olive orchards, and their houses, and the interest on money, grain, wine, and oil that you have been exacting from them.” (NRSV, Nehemiah 5:11) The people saw the error of their ways, and did as Nehemiah said.
