Corinth was (and is) in Greece, which at the time of Paul’s letter was part of the vast Roman Empire. Corinth was destroyed by an earthquake in 1858, but was rebuilt a few miles away, and stands to this day. Ancient Corinth was ransacked by the Romans in 146 B.C.E. By 44 B.C.E., it was rebuilt as a Roman colony. It became a thriving, wealthy center of international trade. Paul helped establish the church in Corinth sometime during his second missionary journey, around 50 C.E.
