Nineveh was the capital city of Assyria, the nation that conquered Israel in 722 B.C.E. Assyria was an enormous empire known for its cruel war practices. At the height of its power, its territory included much of modern-day Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. Nineveh was in the center of the empire.
