After Job’s friends finished talking, God spoke to Job out of the whirlwind. God did not give the answers Job or his friends expected. God began by questioning Job: “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know!” (NRSV, Job 38:4–5)
