Who was Mary?

Mary was the mother of Jesus. In first-century Palestine, it was common for girls to marry early, even as young as twelve years old. Though the Bible does not say how old Mary was when Jesus was born, it stands to reason that she was a teenager. The name Mary is derived from the Hebrew name Mara, which means “bitter.”
