At this point in the book of Tobit, the scene shifts suddenly to Media, more than three hundred miles away from Nineveh. Sarah had been married to seven husbands, but each husband was killed by the demon Asmodeus. Significantly, the husbands were killed “before they had been with her as is customary for wives.” (NRSV, Tobit 3:8) That put Sarah in an untenable situation.
