Many people think the messenger was Jesus. Some say the messenger has yet to come. Based on Malachi 4:5, some people think the messenger refers to Elijah: “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.” (KJV, Malachi 4:5)
