Who were Martha and Mary?

Mary and Martha were sisters who were followers of Jesus. In the book of John, readers learn that Mary and Martha lived in the village of Bethany, and were the sisters of a man named Lazarus (not the Lazarus from the rich man/poor Lazarus parable). In John 11:2 and John 12:3, Mary is identified as being the one who washed Jesus’ feet and dried his feet with her hair.
