Who were the Babylonians?

Babylon started out as a small province in what is now part of Iraq. As the Assyrian Empire declined, the Babylonians seized the moment to conquer it and take its land. Also, the Babylonian Empire included a large portion of what is now Saudi Arabia. The Babylonians worshiped hundreds—maybe thousands—of gods, many of which were introduced to the empire by conquered peoples.
