Who were the Pharisees and Sadducees, and why didn’t John like them? |
Pharisees were a large group of community leaders who had great influence in political and religious matters. Sadducees were another group of leaders made up of the rich descendants of priests. Both groups had merits, but John the Baptist—and later, Jesus—criticized them for keeping the letter of the law, but ignoring the spirit of it. Jesus criticized these religious leaders at length in Matthew 23.
