New TestamentGospels and Acts of the Apostles |
Who were the first apostles to be recruited by Jesus? |
Two brothers, Simon (also known as Peter) and Andrew. The brothers made their living fishing. Jesus called to them, “Come with me. I’ll make a new kind of fisherman out of you. I’ll show you how to catch men and women instead of perch and bass.” (The Message; Matthew 4:19) Immediately, the brothers stopped their work and followed Jesus.
As Jesus, Simon Peter, and Andrew walked, they came across two more brothers, James and John. Like Simon Peter and Andrew, James and John were fishermen, and like Simon Peter and Andrew, they stopped what they were doing and followed Jesus.
