Who were the twenty-four elders?

Theories vary, but one prevalent idea is that the twenty-four represented the new, complete church. That is, the twelve represented twelve tribes of Israel established by God in the Old Testament and the other twelve represented the twelve apostles commissioned by Jesus in the New Testament.
