Not all of the Israelites complained—just “the rabble.” (Numbers 11:4) As troublemakers are wont to do, these troublemakers complained because they had no meat. Sure, they had manna—but they were tired of manna. They wept, “We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic: But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, besides this manna, before our eyes” (KJV, Numbers 11:5–6)
