Why is leprosy mentioned so many times in the laws?

The modern definition of leprosy is more specific than it was in biblical times. Today leprosy refers to a chronic bacterial disease with outward symptoms of severe skin lesions. In biblical times, leprosy referred to a host of skin disorders, including psoriasis, boils, and burns.
