Why was Saul known also as Paul?

Two first names were common then. Just as the apostles had two first names, so did Saul. The name Saul is a Hebrew name. Paul is a Roman name. Saul might have gone by Paul long before he was in Antioch, but it is in this part of the Bible that his use of that name is recorded: “But Saul, also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him.…” (NRSV, Acts 13:9) Because the Bible refers to Saul as Paul after this point, henceforth he will be referred to in this book as Paul as well.
