Why were the Edomites prideful?

Part of what made the Edomites proud was their geographic advantage over their enemies. Part of Edom was situated on rocky cliffs, which formed a natural barrier against invaders. The cliffs, most scholars contend, were none other than Petra, whose stately red rock carvings continue to attract visitors today.
