Physiology: Animal Function and Reproduction

Animal Senses

Do animals suffer from allergies?

Yes, some animals seem to have allergies. In particular, we know more about domestic than wild animal allergies (although some researchers claim that wild animals would have fewer allergies because of their “wild,” more natural diets). For example, veterinarians report that dogs, cats, and even pet birds suffer from allergies. They may be allergic to food, insect bites, dust, household chemicals, or pollen. Instead of having runny noses and watery eyes, most domestic animals experience itchy skin conditions, difficulty in breathing, or disruptions in the digestive tract.
