Antibiotics function by weakening the cell wall or interfering with the protein synthesis or RNA synthesis of the bacterial cell. For example, penicillin weakens the cell wall to the point that the internal pressure causes the cell to swell and eventually burst. Certain antibiotics are more effective against gram-negative bacteria, while others are more effective against gram-positive bacteria.
