Extinction

How do biologists predict whether a species will become extinct?

In order to predict whether a species in a particular habitat will become extinct, biologists use a method called population viability analysis (PVA). Computer modeling generates PVAs using the species’ life history data, genetic variability, and a population’s response to environmental conditions—especially disturbances—to predict viability of a species.
