Plants and animals use glucose as their main energy source, but the way this molecule is stored differs. Animals store their glucose subunits in the form of glycogen, a series of long, branched chains of glucose. Plants store their glucose as starch, formed by long, unbranched chains of glucose molecules. Both glycogen and starch are formed through the chemical reaction of dehydration synthesis, and both are broken down through the process of hydrolysis.
