How many human RNA genes exist?

About 250 genes code for short RNA sequences instead of protein. These RNA strands appear to regulate the activity of other genes, particularly those involved in embryonic development. (For more about genes, see below and the chapter “Heredity, Natural Selection, and Evolution.”)
