How many vertebrae are in the necks of various mammals? |
Not all mammal neck vertebrae (cervical vertebrae) are created equal. Although most mammals have only seven neck bones, the manatee and the two-toed sloth have only six neck bones; a giraffe’s long neck has seven neck bones, the same as many other mammals, but the vertebrae are greatly elongated; the ant bear has eight neck bones, and the three-toed sloth has nine neck bones.
