What are autoimmune diseases?

Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system rejects the body’s own molecules. Insulin-dependent diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, and rheumatic fever are autoimmune diseases. In contrast, in immunodeficiency diseases such as AIDS, the immune system is too weak to fight disease.
