Roots

What are some causes of root damage?

Roots may be damaged by temperature extremes, drought, nematodes, and other soil microfauna, such as springtails that nibble the succulent roots. When the roots are damaged, cutting back the shoot system helps to re-establish the balance between the root and shoot systems. Unless a gardener is careful, transplanting seedlings and other plants can also damage roots, especially the smaller plants with more fragile root hairs, such as cucumbers.
