Commonly prepared slide preparations are wholemounts, smears, squashes, and sections. Smears, squashes, and sections are techniques used to make specimens thinner or smaller; wholemounts are often used to examine an entire organism or specific organ structure in some detail. Smears are mostly prepared for bacteriological and blood specimens, squashes are prepared to study chromosomes, and sections are prepared to examine tissues and cells.
