Biology in the Laboratory

Inside Other Biotech Labs

What is bioprospecting?

Bioprospecting involves the search for possible new plant or microbial strains, particularly from the world’s largest rain forests and coral reefs. These organisms are then used to develop new phytopharmaceuticals. Who owns the resources of these countries is a controversial subject: the countries in which the resources reside or the company that turns them into valuable products.
