Environmental Challenges

What is the NIMBY syndrome?

NIMBY is the acronym for “Not In My Back Yard” (another acronym, although not as popular, is NIMFY or “Not In My Front Yard.”) It refers to major community resistance to construction of new incinerators, landfills, prisons, roads, electric windmill generators, mining operations, hydrofracking, and so forth, especially near residential areas. Most people do not want what goes with such construction mainly because of the pollution (air, water, and noise) that is often associated with such activities.
