Cellular Basics

Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells

What is the average life span of a cell?

The life span of a cell varies greatly. In general, most living cells do not live longer than a month. Even cells that live longer, such as liver and brain cells, constantly renew their components so that no part of the cell is really more than a month old. Even plasma cells— that fight off antigens a body encounters immediately—are short-lived, dying off in about ten to seventeen days. Certain cells, such as memory cells, can survive much longer.
