What is the cytoskeleton?

The cytoskeleton is a network of protein filaments (or fibers) that extend throughout the cytoplasm. This network maintains the shape of cells, anchors the organelles to the plasma membrane, and helps with a variety of cell movements. The three types of fibers are as follows:
