What is the function of nerve tissue?

Nerve tissue serves as the communication system of an animal. Nerve tissue allows an animal to receive stimuli from its environment and to relay an appropriate response. (For more about nerves and nerve cells, see the chapter “Physiology: Animal Function and Reproduction.”)
