What is the homunculus theory?

The Fhomunculus theory had its roots in the late seventeenth century, when illustrations depicted sperm containing a miniaturized adult—a preformed human called a homunculus. It was thought at that time that the sperm (and its homunculus) contained all of the traits for building a baby and that the egg and womb served simply as incubators.
