Seeds

What temperature conditions are necessary for seed germination?

Overall, the best temperatures for seed germination in most plants are 77 to 86°F (25–30°C). Depending on the variety, some seeds are able to germinate at temperatures ranging from around 40 to 86°F (5–30°C). In fact, some seeds need a certain amount of time in below-freezing temperatures in order to grow, called stratification; for example, parsley seeds must be around 40°F (5°C, usually in a refrigerator) for around two weeks to a month—to simulate a winter environ-ment—so it will germinate better.

Depending on the plant species, different temperatures may be required in order for the seed to successfully germinate.
