What type of signals control cell reproduction?

Cell reproduction is controlled by both external and internal signals. External signals are often environmental and include such things as the availability of nutrients and space for growth. An example of an internal signal is the rise and fall of protein levels at specific points in the cell cycle, which is maintained by checkpoints and feedback controls.
