Pink bread molds of the genus Neurospora have long served as powerful laboratory models used to study genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Scientists first demonstrated the concept that one gene produces a corresponding protein by studying Neurospora. Its ease of growth and the extensive genetic information available for this organism make it a convenient model for the study of many processes found in higher plants and animals.
