Women’s Roles

How did the Davis couple handle the loss of their child?

Their grief was similar to the Lincoln family’s in that the wife took on the lion’s share of expressing it. Mrs. Davis was practically prostrate, but she was also pregnant, so she had to force herself to make it through the next few months. Their daughter, Varina Anna Davis—later known as the Princess of the Confederacy—was born in July 1864.
