How did the end of the decade alter perceptions of the Civil War?

In November 1989, the film Glory was released to select theatres: it went into broader release in February 1990. Glory was, quite likely, the finest Civil war film ever made, and millions of Americans suddenly became more conscious of the roles played by black soldiers. And then, by sheer happenstance, came one of the landmark events of that time, which helped connect Americans to their own past.
