Ten brigades were assembled. Edward Porter Alexander sketched them as follows:

Brockenbrough, Davis, McGowan, Archer, Garnett, Kemper

Lane, Scales, Armistead,

Wilcox.

Off they marched, roughly 14,000 Confederates engaged in the single most desperate military venture of the war, perhaps even of the century.
